Guillotine

Guillotine, die bekannte, in Frankreich übliche Hinrichtungsmaschine, aus zwei oben mit einem Querbalken verbundenen Säulen bestehend, zwischen denen ein scharfes Eisen, das durch ein in einer Kurbel laufendes Seil dirigirt wird, schnell und sicher auf den Ausschnitt eines Bretes herabfällt worein der Hinzurichtende den Kopf legt. Diese Maschine in der Revolution durch den Convent eingeführt und am 25. April 1795 zuerst angewendet ist durchaus keine neue Erfindung; der Dr. Guillotin, dem man dieselbe gewöhnlich zuschreibt, hat das Werkzeug, das schon im Alterthum bekannt war, nur vervollkommnet und durch seine Verbesserungen der sichern Trennung des Rumpfes vom Kopfe bewerkstelligt Konradin von Schwaben, der letzte Hohenstaufe, wurde in Neapel 1268 durch eine ähnliche Maschine enthauptet, auch Beatrix Cenci (s. d.) auf gleiche Weise hingerichtet. Die Engländer unter Heinrich VIII., Deutschland und das östliche Europa kannten schon im Mittelalter eine ähnliche Vorrichtung und Holländer brachten die Guillotine sogar nach Ostindien.
