Zante

Zante, eine der jonischen Inseln (s. d.), 4 Quadrat M. groß und von 45,000 Menschen bewohnt, die sich vorzugsweise mit Baumwollen-Spinnen und Weben ernähren, aber auch viel Weinbau treiben und jährl. 12–13 Mill. Ps. Korinthen, sowie an 65,000 Tonnen Olivenöl versenden. Die Hauptstadt gl. N. hat 20,000 Ew. und trägt ganz den Charakter einer ital. Stadt. Berühmt sind die 2 Stunden von derselben entfernten Pechquellen.
