Schubert, Franz. Die ernsten und düstern Tonstücke dieses Componisten, der, in dem lebenslustigen, heitern Wien am 31. Jan. 1797 geb., leider ebendaselbst schon 1830 in die Region der ewig heitern Sphärenharmonien überging, haben einen hohen Kunstwerth, namentlich seine vielen Balladen und Lieder, unter denen die vorzüglichsten und allbekanntesten der »Erlkönig,« »die Forelle,« Hector's Abschied,« und »die Rose« sind. Die seltene Tiefe seines sich auf sich selbst beschränkenden, schwermüthigen Gemüthes gewann ihm die edelsten Gemüther. Als Jean Paul des Augenlichtes beraubt worden war, waren es S's Balladen, welche ihm den süßesten Trost gewährten, und als der Tod endlich bei ihm anklopfte, wollte er nochmals seine Lieblingsballade hören. Jetzt erst wird S. immer mehr als großer Künstler anerkannt, und lange wird sein Name von der Zukunft genannt werden. Seine sterbliche Hülle ruht neben Beethoven, in welchem er das höchste Ideal musikalischer Kunst verehrte.
