Patras

Patras (Paträ bei den Alten), Hauptstadt des griech. Departements Achaja und Elis, mit 8000 Ew., vor der griech. Revolution eine blühende Stadt mit 24,000 Bew., wurde im griech. Freiheitskampfe von den Türken angezündet und in einen Schutthaufen verwandelt. Seit 1828 wieder im Besitz der Griechen, ist sie neu aufgebaut, wozu ihre dem Handel günstige Lage an den kleinen Dardanellen im Golf von Lepanto und ihr trefflicher Hafen unstreitig den Impuls gaben.
