Milton, John, John, der Dichter des verlorenen Paradieses, ward 1608 in London geb., empfing eine sorgfältige Erziehung, hielt sich nach beendigten Studien zu Cambridge einige Zeit auf dem Landgute seines Vaters auf, schrieb dort einige Komödien, und reiste dann nach Frankreich und Italien, wo er Bekanntschaft mit den größesten Gelehrten seiner Zeit machte. Seine übrige Lebenszeit brachte er in London zu, und gab hier seine Jugendgedichte heraus, in denen man l'Allegro und il Pensoroso findet. Damals ernannte ihn Cromwell zum lateinischen Secretair des Staatsraths, allein unablässiges Studiren und ein chronisches Kopfweh waren Ursache, daß der Dichter blind wurde; nach Cromwell's Sturz verlor er seinen Posten und zog sich vom öffentlichen Leben zurück. Milton starb 1674 zu London, ehe seinen Gedichten die verdiente Bewunderung zu Theil geworden war, die ihnen später die Nachwelt zollte. Erst in neuerer Zeit ist ihm ein Denkmal in der Westminster Abtei gesetzt worden. Milton lebte mäßig im geistreichen Kreise seiner Freunde. Sein Vergnügen war Musik, worin er es zu großer Vollkommenheit gebracht hatte. Nachdem er blind geworden, unterrichtete er seine Töchter, so daß sie ihnen später seinen literarischen Arbeiten helfen konnten. Er war dreimal verheirathet; seine nachgelassenen Werke sind vielfältig gesammelt und commentirt.
