Glasgow, nach Edinburgh die größte Stadt Schottlands, Jedem bekannt, der Scott's Robin den Rothen las, liegt in dem Thale des Clyde und hat 32,000 Häuser mit 150,000 Ew. Die bequemen Trottoirs, 3 schöne Brücken, die bis in die Stadt einlaufenden Schiffe, die herrliche Kathedrale im sächsisch-gothischen Stil, das mit jonischen Säulen verzierte Rathhaus, das prachtvolle Gefängniß, eines der schönsten Gebäude Britanniens, die Börse mit ihrer offenen Säulenhalle, das Theater (eines der vorzüglichsten Schottlands), die königliche Bank, eine Universität, Museen, Promenaden, machen Glasgow zu einer der wichtigsten Städte Europa's, zur bedeutendsten Handelsstadt Schottlands. Nirgends wie hier üben die Frauen einen so wohlthätigen Einfluß auf öffentliche Hilfsanstalten Bemerkenswerth sind in dieser Beziehung das Rettungshaus für Ertrunkene, das Krankenhaus mit 180 Betten, die Anstalt für verführte Mädchen, das Hospital, die Taubstummenanstalt und das prachtvolle Irrenhaus. Glasgow gehört zu den vorzüglichsten Fabrikstädten Europa's; es versendet allein an Baumwollenwaaren jährlich 120 Millionen Yards.
