Cervantes, Saavedra Miguel de, Saavedra, Miguel de, der liebenswürdige Dichter des beliebtesten aller Romane, des unsterblichen Don Quixote, den 9. October 1547 zu Alcala de Henares von armen Eltern geboren, durch Juan Lopez gebildet, trat in seinem 22. Jahre zuerst mit der Idylle »Filena« auf. Arm von Geburt, ohne Gönner, vertrieb ihn die Sorge um einen elenden Lebensunterhalt aus Spanien; lange Jahre lebte er in Italien, focht bei Lepanto, ward von Seeräubern nach Algier gebracht, und kehrte erst 1580 in sein Vaterland zurück, noch immer mit Noth und Mangel kämpfend. Seine Novelle »der Gefangene« erzählt seine Schicksale; um dieselbe Zeit erschien der Schäferroman »Galatea.« Cervantes begann jetzt für das Theater zu schreiben und lieferte eine Menge von Trauerspielen, die ohne die Nebenbuhlerschaft Lopez de Vega's bewundert worden wären; unter ihnen ragt »Numancia« als das Gebilde eines erhaben schöpferischen Geistes einzig hervor. Nach mehrjährigem Stillschweigen erschien »Don Quixote« und wurde mit dem allgemeinsten Jubel glänzend aufgenommen. Er ist das unübertreffliche Muster aller Romane und, von jeder Seite betrachtet ein vollendetes Meisterwerk, das alle Bedingungen der Unsterblichkeit in sich selbst trägt. Cervantes starb arm, wie er gelebt hatte, am 23. April 1616; nachdem er noch 12 Novellen und den Roman »Persiles und Sigismunda« beendigt hatte. Erst vor wenigen Jahren ward ihm in Madrid ein Denkmal gesetzt. »Don Quixote« ist in alle europäischen Sprachen übersetzt worden und wird noch lange Zeit unübertroffen und das herrlichste Vorbild eines Romans bleiben.
